Shyness vs. Anxiety vs. Selective Mutism
Tuesday, October 20
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Parents and caregivers can learn about the differences between being shy, social anxiety, and selective mutism from an expert.
Many children are described as “just shy,” but for some, silence in social settings is more than temperament—it can reflect social anxiety or selective mutism. Katelyn Reed, MS, LLP, an expert in selective mutism and social anxiety, will help parents, caregivers, and educators understand how to distinguish typical shyness from anxiety-based communication difficulties. We’ll explore what social anxiety and selective mutism look like in everyday life, how they differ from shyness, and why these differences matter for a child’s development and well-being. Attendees will also learn practical, supportive strategies for responding to children who struggle to speak in certain settings, with an emphasis on building bravery over time.
*Please register to receive the Zoom link, as well as a recording of the presentation after the live event.
Katelyn is a limited licensed psychologist and Selective Mutism Program Director at Thriving Minds in Chelsea.
