July's book is The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow, the story of an isolated girl named January living in the manor of Mr. Locke, a prominent member of the New England Archaeological Society, who views January less as a person and more as a "perfectly unique specimen" due to her skin color and mysterious origins. As the manor feels less like a home and more like a prison, January discovers a magical book and finds literal doors into other words. January escapes with her dog Bad, but soon finds Locke and others won't let her go so easily.
"The Ten Thousand Doors of January, Alix E. Harrow's debut novel, is one for the favorites shelf. It will lead you on a journey through books within books, worlds within worlds, mysteries within mysteries, until, finally, you reach a deep breath taken after a perfectly satisfying last page. Your breath. The last page of the book in your hand. The kind of last page that bewitches your fingers and, yes, you are turning again to the first page before you've decided whether you'll reread the whole book now or just turn to a favorite part. There will be favorite parts." Read the rest of this review, published on NPR, here: https://www.npr.org/2019/09/14/755172071/youll-want-to-open-every-one-of-the-ten-thousand-doors-of-january
